PGGB V9 introduces the Precision Optimized Upsampling Engine as the new default (the previous Nyquist-Shannon engine remains available for offline whole-track processing). This is not a minor optimization; it is a reformulation of the reconstruction approach that changes both the quality ceiling and the practical resource requirements.
How the New Engine Works
The Precision Optimized engine builds a processing pipeline tailored to the selected precision and the exact input-to-output sample-rate conversion. Within the passband it preserves, reconstruction accuracy is limited by the arithmetic precision (up to 256-bit) rather than by filter length or windowed design.
Key practical consequences:
- Memory use no longer scales with track length. The old engine held the entire track at working precision; the new engine does not. Paging is not needed.
- Processing speed is now governed primarily by the number of CPU cores rather than by memory.
- High-frequency content above the preserved band is controlled separately, reducing signal-correlated distortion that previously limited perceived quality even when audible-band accuracy was already high.
- Filter choices are simplified to Optimal (recommended), Alternate (wider bandwidth before roll-off), and Minimal (least high-frequency filtering). Both Optimal and Alternate match reconstruction accuracy to the internal calculation precision in the band they preserve.
The new engine produces more natural timbre, improved separation, and better spatial presentation, while using substantially less RAM and completing much faster. For typical offline PCM work up to 256-bit and DSD up to DSD256, a 4-core system with 16 GB RAM is a practical starting point. Higher DSD rates (DSD512+) and Live operation benefit from more cores and additional RAM, but the previous extreme memory configurations are no longer required for the new engine.
Live, Remote, and ARC Capabilities
PGGB V9 supports Live Playback & Streaming with the same reconstruction in real time. Live mode sources include local files, audio from another player via PGGB Bridge (ASIO on Windows / Core Audio on Mac), or UPnP. Live output goes to a local DAC (WASAPI/ASIO or Core Audio) or a network endpoint (PGGB-Audio-Link / PAL preferred, UPnP fallback).
Remote is a lightweight web interface served on the local network (default port 8180). It provides transport, volume, artwork, folder browsing/queuing, and settings access from any browser. It can be added to a phone or tablet home screen.
ARC (Anthropometric Room and Crossfeed) for PCM or DSD Live playback adds user head measurements, speaker angle, and brightness compensation. For offline processing, an optional room simulation (Studio, Living Room, or Concert Hall) is available.
Bottom Line for Users
The Precision Optimized engine removes the previous memory bottleneck while raising the practical quality of the reconstruction in the audible range. Offline remastering becomes lighter and faster on more modest hardware; Live processing brings the same approach into real-time playback. V9 expands how PGGB technology can be used without compromising the reconstruction accuracy that has defined the product.
