Coming soon... 'PGGB Reference Systems'

With PGGB V9, a new kind of listening setup comes into view: PGGB’s high-precision reconstruction and noise shaping can be integrated with live playback from a source player to a DAC. For listeners who value what PGGB processing can bring to a system, this opens up intriguing possibilities.

In this approach, PGGB handles much of the upsampling and signal processing before the signal reaches the DAC. The DAC’s role is then focused on converting the incoming upsampled signal to the final analogue output. That may make it possible to build compelling systems around more accessible DACs, while the results will still depend on the complete signal chain and individual components.

A useful target for PGGB playback is PCM at 16fS (705.6/768 kHz) or DSD512, where the sound-quality benefits really manifest. A USB connection is required for these rates, making USB implementation and filtering important considerations. DACs with legacy S/PDIF connections, such as Toslink and coaxial, may offer another route: depending on the DAC and setup, they can support lower PCM rates, while 16fS PCM may be possible over DBNC.

I’m transitioning “Dan’s Blog” to focus on PGGB Reference Systems... a series focused on complete component chains that aim for reference-quality sound at reasonable prices. Each system will list the retail components, explain how they connect, and share my listening impressions. To keep systems cost-conscious, some chains may use less conventional components. Where appropriate, the components may be AudioWise or an affiliated brand.

The first system will be built around the Chord Electronics Mojo 2. I’ll discuss how the same signal chain might translate to other Chord DACs and what practical considerations could come with that change.
